MiraeN's Golden A' Design Award winning comic book aesthetic creates student engagement before learning begins
Design that acknowledges student reality creates emotional invitation preceding educational engagement.
The three seconds before a student opens a textbook determine whether learning happens at all. Kiwook Kim and the MiraeN design team recognized that educational materials compete against entertainment designed by engagement experts, and conventional subject-matter graphics rarely win that competition. Shining Moments, their Golden A' Design Award winning textbook series for Korean middle schools, abandons academic imagery entirely in favor of warm, comic book style illustrations depicting ordinary adolescent friendships and daily experiences. The strategic departure reflects accumulated market intelligence from a publisher with over seven decades of experience. Rather than signaling subject content through symbols, the covers create immediate familiarity through scenes students recognize from their own lives. Educational publishing brands face a fundamental choice: design for institutional expectation or design for emotional connection. MiraeN chose connection, and international design experts validated the approach.
The production craft behind Shining Moments amplifies the emotional strategy through specific material choices. Holographic foil creates dynamic effects in white areas that shift with viewing angle. Colored foil enhances title visibility while maintaining illustrative warmth. Silk epoxy applications within the illustrations create dimensional effects that reward close examination and invite touch. The 12-book series uses bright Pantone colors on spines for shelf presence across institutional environments. Creative Director Hyunji Son, Designer Jihye Yoon, and Illustrator Jongmin Choi developed analog illustration styles with soft colors and incomplete details that feel handmade rather than digitally sterile. The multi-generational appeal serves institutional adoption: teachers recognize nostalgic warmth from their own educational memories while students encounter contemporary comic aesthetics they already enjoy.
Educational publishing brands often treat design as wrapper rather than substance. Shining Moments demonstrates that visual invitation precedes cognitive engagement. When students feel positive emotions upon encountering learning materials, subsequent interaction becomes more likely. The finest curriculum means nothing to students who never open the book. Perhaps textbook covers should welcome learners rather than merely label contents.
