Mathematical ceiling curves translate the physics of light in gems into dynamic retail architecture
A jewelry store became its own gem through architectural translation of product principles.
The most compelling retail environments speak the same visual language as the merchandise they display. Masato Kure's King Mo jewelry store in Nanjing demonstrates this principle through an architectural concept that draws directly from jewelry itself. The design team observed how necklaces and bracelets consist of countless small gems working together, and they translated that observation into white steel rods arranged along mathematical curves across the ceiling. The result creates geometric patterns that shift as visitors move through the 1200 square meter space, mimicking the complex light play that makes gems captivating. Winner of the 2025 Golden A' Design Award in Interior Space and Exhibition Design, King Mo proves that the most powerful retail concepts emerge from studying the products themselves rather than imposing external aesthetic ideas.
The technical execution reveals equally instructive lessons for brands operating multi-brand retail formats. Each 80mm diameter rod accommodates lighting and sprinkler systems within its hollow core, transforming regulatory requirements into aesthetic opportunities. The installation methodology employed numbered components and pre-patterned ceiling panels, demonstrating how systematic approaches can realize ambitious visions. For enterprises managing composite stores, King Mo addresses a persistent challenge: creating unified environments that amplify multiple brand identities without diluting any single one. The ceiling treatment establishes overall experience quality while individual display zones maintain distinct brand expressions. Visitors perceive both the destination's premium character and each participating brand's unique identity. The design team, including Masashi Ota and Yosuke Tsukamoto, created a space where commercial function and artistic expression exist in productive harmony.
