A single production pattern yields four distinct flooring options through heritage inspired modular engineering
Manufacturing limitations transformed into four pattern possibilities demonstrate the creative power of constraint.
Most flooring manufacturers face a familiar puzzle: standard plywood sheets generate predictable waste when cutting curved or organic shapes. Sahar Bakhtiari Rad confronted this challenge while developing Sialk wood flooring for Tehran-based brand Barahas and discovered something unexpected. By dividing the primary form into two component pieces, the entire design vocabulary expanded from one pattern to four while waste plummeted to negligible levels. The Sialk collection, which recently earned a Silver A' Design Award in Building Materials and Construction Components Design, draws its flowing curves from pottery artifacts discovered at the Sialk archaeological site, one of humanity's oldest civilizations. What began as a practical manufacturing problem became an elegant demonstration of how production constraints can spark creative solutions. Building materials brands searching for meaningful differentiation might find inspiration in treating limitations as design opportunities rather than obstacles.
The mechanism behind Sialk's four pattern system rewards examination. The main form functions as pattern one. The two separated pieces serve independently as patterns two and three. Recombining pieces with the main form creates pattern four. Each shape dimension considers both final installation composition and manufacturing sheet utilization, meaning production planning, inventory management, and packaging all simplify while customer options multiply. Interior designers working on hospitality projects can differentiate lobbies from guest rooms using the same material family. Commercial specifications gain flexibility without requiring separate product lines. The environmental dimension adds another layer: D4 glue replaces urea formaldehyde throughout production, eliminating off-gassing concerns while maintaining water resistance and underfloor heating compatibility.
