Peng Guo, Ka Ping Kwok and Bin Li Build Emotional Geography With 200 Tons of Structure
A coordinate system concept becomes the organizing principle for every structural and lighting decision.
When a stage structure weighs over 200 tons yet appears almost weightless, something remarkable has occurred at the intersection of engineering and emotional intelligence. The 2023 Hua Chenyu Mars Concert stage, designed by Peng Guo, Ka Ping Kwok and Bin Li for Beijing Yamei Times Culture Media, demonstrates what happens when a conceptual framework drives every physical decision. The Martian Coordinate System concept did more than provide a clever name. The framework became the literal organizing principle for a rectangular prism measuring 47.5 meters long, 27.5 meters wide, and 22 meters high. Horizontal and vertical structures referenced coordinate axes. Sequential luminous panels resembled measurement scales. The entire venue transformed into a three dimensional map of shared memories between artist and audience, with every rigging point and lighting fixture serving the central narrative.
Entertainment companies and event production agencies frequently search for ways to connect technical capabilities with emotional resonance. The Mars Concert production achieved integration rather than mere addition. Twelve adjustable lighting columns represented twelve months of annual companionship. Ten custom fixtures arranged in a six horizontal, four vertical configuration spanning 30 meters highlighted decade milestones through programmed lens sequences. Stage sections evolved visually from saplings to flowers, making growth tangible rather than metaphorical. The Silver A' Design Award recognition in Performing Arts, Stage, Style and Scenery Design acknowledged precisely what the design team accomplished: structural elements functioning simultaneously as engineering solutions and storytelling devices.
