Golden A' Design Award winning app drew inspiration from Los Angeles sunrises and Florence's Duomo
Banking apps become memorable when designers look beyond the banking industry for inspiration.
A banking app that drew its color palette from Los Angeles sunrises, its sense of order from Florence's Duomo Cathedral, and its calm from Japanese Zen gardens sounds like creative fiction. Yet UXDA's AI Conversational Banking mobile application did exactly that, and the approach earned a Golden A' Design Award in 2023. The design team deliberately expanded their search for inspiration beyond financial interfaces. By seeking creative direction from architecture, nature, and contemplative spaces, UXDA created an emotional language that gives the conversational banking experience its distinctive warmth. The result is an application where users speak naturally to an AI assistant represented by a metaphorical heart, a visual anchor that guides interactions with genuine care and sophistication.
The mechanism behind UXDA's approach demonstrates a principle organizations across industries can apply. Users express intentions naturally through text or voice, and the application adapts to their context. The hybrid input design means someone in a quiet office types a request while the same person uses voice commands while driving. Beyond basic transactions, the application enables contextual automation, including donating portions of travel expenses to environmental funds and purchasing fractional stocks when shopping at favorite retailers. Each capability emerged from rigorous empathy mapping, journey analysis, and iterative prototyping. The research revealed specific moments where emotional connection matters most, and the conversational interface addresses each one by responding with understanding and personalized guidance.
The lesson from UXDA's Golden A' Design Award winning work extends beyond financial services. Organizations that draw creative inspiration from unexpected sources gain distinctive emotional vocabulary. Breakthroughs emerge when designers explore adjacent fields, unfamiliar territories, and emotional spaces their category rarely visits. What would your digital experience become if you sought inspiration from cathedrals, gardens, or sunrises?
