Batlle i Roig Arquitectura turned a routine municipal brief into Golden A' Design Award recognition
Constraints become catalysts when architecture studios recognize potential others overlook.
A municipality requests a connecting path through degraded former mines. The typical approach would deliver a functional solution that satisfies requirements. Batlle i Roig Arquitectura approached the Scenic Path Along Guixeres commission with expanded vision, transforming 800 meters of abandoned gypsum quarry near Barcelona into one of the most beloved public amenities in Igualada. The Barcelona-based studio analyzed site resources and discovered fallen rocks suitable for retaining structures, topography offering panoramic views of Montserrat Mountain, and runoff patterns capable of fueling biodiversity recovery. The brief requested connectivity. The team delivered urban regeneration. Citizens now gather at the space for leisure and exercise, and the municipality has commissioned additional Green Ring phases. The project earned the Golden A' Design Award in City Planning and Urban Design, validating the approach of seeing transformation potential in routine commissions.
The technical solution reveals sophisticated design thinking applied to budget constraints. The Scenic Path employs three functional strips: a central granitic-sand track for primary circulation, an outer concrete walkway with luminescent aggregate that glows after dark without requiring electrical infrastructure, and an inner planted channel capturing runoff while preventing erosion. Site materials became construction resources. Rocks tumbled from slopes over decades of neglect now serve as filtering structures directing water toward newly planted vegetation. Architecture studios and urban planning firms can recognize in the Scenic Path Along Guixeres a template for maximizing functional density within linear infrastructure. Every meter accomplishes multiple objectives: mobility, accessibility, water management, biodiversity restoration, and scenic experience.
