A sensor capable of detecting temperature changes within 0.15 degrees Celsius typically belongs in a laboratory, not a kitchen appliance. Yet the Arnica Kopuklu Turkish coffee machine, designed by Yasemin Ulukan and the Senur Design Team, embeds precisely such precision into a countertop device. The algorithm performs something elegant: by tracking how quickly liquid temperature rises, the system calculates actual water volume in the pot, then adjusts heating power accordingly. Turkish coffee presents a uniquely demanding challenge because the beverage is consumed with its grounds, requiring an extremely narrow window between undercooked bitterness and foam overflow. The Golden A' Design Award recognition earned in 2021 validated a solution to a problem coffee lovers had accepted as requiring constant human attention.
What makes the development process particularly instructive for home appliance brands is the rigorous user research methodology. The design team conducted blind tasting tests with hundreds of participants across multiple development stages, comparing results against available products in the market. Prototype units went into actual homes for extended testing, with detailed surveys capturing daily use experiences. The four taste settings available through the illuminated rotating control panel emerged directly from preference clusters identified through research rather than engineering assumptions.
