Joye Chuang and Celine Liou Transform a Sixty Year Old Shophouse into Championship Coffee Destination
Heritage buildings become powerful brand storytelling tools through strategic preservation and cultural memory.
What does a world champion coffee roaster's flagship store look like? Joye Chuang and Celine Liou answered that question by transforming a sixty-year-old shophouse in Tainan's historic Chihkan District into Scent of a Golden Age, the sixth franchise location for a brand whose owner earned the World Coffee Roasting Championship title in 2014. The design team celebrated the original steel frame and iron cladding, drawing from Showa era Japanese aesthetics to create what they describe as a place with refined essence of time. The gold-painted spiral staircase, fifty-year-old handmade paper umbrellas suspended overhead, and an aromas cabinet wall designed specifically for experiencing coffee scents create layered sensory experiences. Every material choice communicates craftsmanship values that align with championship-level coffee roasting.
The project demonstrates what designers call gesamtkunstwerk, or total artwork, where architecture, materials, lighting, and operational elements combine into coherent brand expression. The inside bamboo lantern echoes the yellow lantern outside the window, extending brand atmosphere into the streetscape. An abstract painting spanning both floors represents rising coffee roasting smoke through sapphire-like texture. The raised seating area on the second floor resembles a floating pavilion, scaled to Japanese rush mat proportions. Completed in three months during 2019, the renovation earned recognition from the A' Design Award with a Golden distinction in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design. For brands considering physical environments as communication tools, Scent of a Golden Age reveals how heritage buildings can become strategic assets when preservation aligns with brand positioning.
Physical spaces remain powerful differentiation tools, creating emotional connections that complement digital brand presence. The Scent of a Golden Age project demonstrates that authenticity rooted in accumulated time adds distinctive qualities to brand environments. When heritage stories and brand stories speak the same language, the building itself becomes meaningful brand communication.
