Custom Material Development Creates Architecture That Serves as Continuous Brand Demonstration
A brick manufacturer's headquarters becomes a 24/7 product demonstration through custom material innovation.
What happens when a brick manufacturing company decides its headquarters should demonstrate product capabilities without a single piece of marketing signage? The Kohan Ceram Central Office Building in Tehran, designed by Hooman Balazadeh, provides an answer through architectural ambition paired with material innovation. The project introduces the Spectacled Brick, a custom hybrid module combining industrial brick with cast glass, developed specifically to serve as masonry, finishing, insulation, and light transmission simultaneously. Positioned alongside a highway between residential neighborhoods and metropolitan traffic, the building communicates to two distinct audiences constantly: commuters experience the structure as a memorable landmark while neighbors encounter the building as a thoughtful addition to their community. For manufacturing brands operating in commodity markets where differentiation proves elusive, the Kohan Ceram project demonstrates that physical presence can deliver lasting communication that compounds over time. Architecture becomes strategic communication made tangible.
The Spectacled Brick emerged from practical experimentation and iterative testing. When the project team discovered a glass workshop operating near the Kohan Ceram factory, they explored combining cast glass with industrial brick. Initial attempts at direct casting produced cracks in the brick blocks during cooling. Through continued refinement, the team developed a method using separately cast glass integrated with specialized adhesives. The resulting module performs multiple functions within a single element, reducing typical complexity of building assemblies. The brick-glass material extends from exterior facade through interior partitions, creating spatial continuity that reinforces brand identity throughout visitor experiences. The project, recognized with a Golden A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design, illustrates how R&D investment in proprietary materials can create competitive advantages that standard products cannot match. For brands considering architectural expression, custom development transforms facilities from functional spaces into strategic assets.
The Kohan Ceram Building reveals a potent principle for manufacturing brands: architecture can serve as perpetual product demonstration when material innovation drives the design. Buildings endure for decades, compounding their communication value as they become embedded in urban memory. For companies whose products relate to construction or materials, headquarters represent an opportunity to showcase capabilities through continuous presence, demonstrating innovation in three dimensions around the clock.
