A Platinum Award winning market demonstrates permanent landscape and adaptable commerce coexisting strategically
Designing architecture with dual temporal layers creates commercial spaces that appreciate rather than depreciate.
Certain buildings reveal something remarkable about the relationship between architecture and time. Marche Vison, designed by Tomoya Akasaka in Mie Prefecture, Japan, embodies a concept the architect calls dual temporal layers: separating what endures from what evolves. The expansive wooden roofs and structural frames were conceived to gain character through seasons, their unpainted surfaces accumulating patina that harmonizes with surrounding nature. Beneath that permanent canopy, smaller retail volumes house the actual commerce, designed for flexibility and change. Commerce shifts constantly while landscapes change slowly, and respecting both rhythms creates architecture with unusual longevity. The nine year design process behind Marche Vison produced something sophisticated: a framework where permanence and adaptability coexist, each strengthening the other.
The mechanism operates through structural separation. Large roofs inspired by the water cycle cover open air spaces, their continuous eaves creating cascading rain curtains that transform weather into sensory feature. Wooden frames reference the torii gates at Akone Yashiro Shrine, connecting commercial activity to centuries of regional prayers for abundant harvests. These elements form the landscape layer. The commercial layer consists of smaller volumes distributed beneath, creating maze like alleys and plazas reconfigurable as tenants change. Recognition of Marche Vison with the Platinum A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design reflects appreciation for strategic thinking serving both cultural continuity and commercial viability. For brands investing in physical presence, the project offers a framework worth examining: identify what represents enduring identity and separate that from operational elements requiring flexibility.
Architecture embracing both permanence and change creates commercial environments where time becomes an ally. When brands consider physical spaces, the question shifts from how long will this look current to how will this grow more meaningful through seasons.
