Veizaga Gronda and Chiarella Developed Algorithms Transforming Wood Plate Flexibility Into Award Winning Pavilion Architecture
Active bending becomes a generative force when algorithms embrace the physics of material flexibility.
Elastic deformation holds remarkable generative potential when algorithms guide material flexibility into structural form. Martín Veizaga, Luciana Gronda, and Mauro Chiarella demonstrated precisely that principle with their Flexo InForm pavilion, winner of the Golden A' Design Award in Generative, Algorithmic, Parametric and AI-Assisted Design. The project transforms three-millimeter Guatambu wooden plates into a self-supporting spatial envelope through active bending controlled by physical simulation algorithms. Drawing inspiration from wicker and rush weaving traditions of the Argentine Littoral region, the structure translates centuries of craft intelligence into computational processes. Flat components ship efficiently, then bloom into complex double-curvature geometries on site. The pavilion assembled in two hours and served a month of outdoor activities at the National University of the Littoral. For brands seeking distinctive activation spaces, the approach offers a compelling combination of visual sophistication and practical logistics.
The algorithm the RILAB team developed generates families of possible pavilion configurations, offering multiple design variations from a single computational framework. Pre-designed variables allow adaptation to different venues, brand requirements, and programmatic needs while maintaining assembly simplicity. Wing nut screws enable construction and deconstruction without specialized tools. The mono-material approach (wood plates plus simple hardware) creates straightforward recycling pathways. Organizations deploying Flexo InForm derivatives gain architectural presence that embodies sustainability values through the physical structure itself. The tripartite support base adapts to uneven terrain, expanding potential activation locations beyond prepared surfaces. Low weight permits repositioning during events without disassembly. For corporate event planners and marketing teams, the system offers distinctive architectural experiences that ship flat, assemble quickly, reuse across multiple occasions, and communicate innovation through their very existence.
When designers embrace material behavior as a creative partner, treating flexibility as a design asset, new architectural possibilities emerge. The Flexo InForm project demonstrates that algorithmic design can simultaneously honor traditional craft knowledge, achieve structural efficiency, and deliver practical event solutions. What might become possible when your organization treats flexibility as a generative force?
