Shelley Mock's Supa Fama Brings Steampunk Babylon to a Shopping Mall

Farm to table values become visible through steampunk aesthetics and living greenery in Guangzhou

Design constraints forced creative solutions that strengthened brand communication through spatial experience.

The most distinctive brand environments often emerge from the most demanding spatial challenges. When Shelley Mock designed Supa Fama in Guangzhou, China, the shopping mall location offered no natural light whatsoever, yet the result earned a Golden A' Design Award in 2024. Mock conceived the 950 square meter space as a steampunk version of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, transforming the constraint into a catalyst for innovation. By integrating lighting and planting design from the earliest concept stages, the team developed solutions where horticultural requirements and atmospheric warmth work together rather than compete. Blackened steel posts now frame a central courtyard where a river of greenery flows beneath carefully positioned light sources that keep plants thriving while diners enjoy soft, inviting illumination.

The Supa Fama project demonstrates a principle that brand managers frequently overlook: spatial design communicates values more powerfully than any marketing message. The restaurant chain advocates for locally sourced, farm-fresh ingredients at a time when food safety concerns are common. Mock translated this brand philosophy into material choices where raw iron and reclaimed timber age visibly toward oxidation while living plants grow and change daily. The juxtaposition tells a story about industrial food systems and natural abundance simultaneously. For food and beverage brands evaluating their physical environments, the mechanism here matters. Every surface, every light fixture, every plant becomes part of a communication system that engages customers emotionally before they read a single menu item. The Golden A' Design Award recognition from the prestigious international competition validated that thoughtful constraint navigation produces distinctive results.

Brand environments that emerge from genuine constraints often outperform those born from unlimited budgets. The Supa Fama restaurant proves that limitations push creative teams to think more deeply about core values and spatial embodiment. Your next significant spatial constraint might just become the distinctive feature your brand needs.
