Golden A' Design Award winning Hungarian campus uses floating structures to manifest institutional values in built form
The MOME Campus proves buildings communicate institutional identity through structural innovation.
What if a building could hover above the ground to give its inhabitants complete freedom to reconfigure spaces below? At the MOME Campus in Budapest, 3h Architects made that question concrete. Building BASE floats on a triple steel core reinforcement suspended from post-tensioned monolithic concrete beams. The floor plates have minimal internal structural interference. The engineering achievement serves a specific educational purpose: spaces can expand, contract, merge, or divide according to teaching needs rather than structural limitations. Lead architects Katalin Csillag and Zsolt Gunther designed the campus to honor Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, the Bauhaus master whose name the university carries. The floating structure embodies Moholy-Nagy's philosophy of pushing boundaries between technical innovation and artistic expression. The MOME Campus earned a Golden A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design through its synthesis of structural innovation and educational philosophy. Three buildings work together: BASE provides flexible studio spaces through its suspended structure, UP Innovation Centre uses a double-shell glass lamella system for both visual distinction and environmental performance, and MASTER features soundproof glass walls that maintain visual openness while preserving acoustic privacy. The architects spent years in weekly consultations with university staff, researching new spatio-educational models. The collaborative process produced spaces genuinely suited to creative education rather than buildings that force teaching to adapt to architectural constraints. Transparency operates on multiple levels: literal glass walls, programmatic visibility of creative processes, and institutional openness to the community.
