Shanghai KNN's Golden A' Design Award winning exhibition shows personalized storylines generate exceptional visitor engagement
Visitors who become story protagonists engage with transformative depth and return for alternate endings.
A visitor steps into Xi'an Gpark shopping center, selects a character on a mobile app, and suddenly the Water Curtain Square becomes a giant space elevator. Crystalline meteorite formations rendered in irregular LED screens hang overhead. Three hours later, augmented reality reveals a personalized story ending based on every choice made along the journey. Recall Of The Universe, the immersive exhibition designed by Tammy Ho and Lumos Miao of Shanghai KNN, earned a Golden A' Design Award in Event and Happening Design by reimagining what commercial space experiences can accomplish. The design team transformed existing shopping center infrastructure into a science fiction universe. Visitors inhabit narratives, make consequential choices, and discover conclusions shaped by their own decisions.
The mechanical brilliance of the Recall Of The Universe exhibition emerges from its character selection system. Different characters unlock different storylines, tasks, and interactive games throughout the space. Points earned from completing challenges provide measurable progression through each personal adventure. The climactic AR ending differs based on accumulated choices, creating genuine replay value as visitors wonder what alternative characters would have experienced. For brands considering experiential investments, the project demonstrates a specific principle: narrative architecture generates profound engagement because participation creates memory. Shanghai KNN completed the entire exhibition in three months, working within existing infrastructure and commercial constraints. The efficiency proves that transformative experiences emerge from clear creative vision more than unlimited budgets.
Spectacle impresses for a moment. Narrative involvement creates stories visitors tell for years. The Recall Of The Universe exhibition suggests that commercial immersion thrives when visitors become protagonists rather than audiences. What existing space in your enterprise might transform if visitors stopped observing and started participating in a story only they could complete?
