A coffee machine in a conference room reveals more about organizational values than any mission statement. The Lavazza Classy Plus, designed by Florian Seidl in Turin and recognized with a Platinum A' Design Award in Home Appliances Design in 2022, demonstrates what happens when 125 years of Italian coffee heritage meets the North American workplace. The machine does not simply dispense espresso. The Classy Plus communicates culture through every design decision, from the contrasting exterior shell with embossed logos to the circular capacitive touch interface that echoes other products in the Lavazza professional range. Seidl navigated a fascinating challenge: creating equipment that feels unmistakably Italian while serving users whose coffee habits include filter coffee and double shots. The result offers a template for any heritage brand seeking to expand without diluting authenticity.
The material strategy reveals sophisticated thinking about how surfaces teach users. Textured ABS plastic covers the main body where hands interact frequently, hiding fingerprints and minor scratches from daily use. Glossy panels occupy less-handled surfaces, maintaining visual clarity. Metal accents appear precisely where users touch the machine: the lever, the cup rest, the chrome ring around the interface. The design team conducted market research that identified specific North American preferences, then engineered features like the double shot function and filter coffee selection to address documented needs rather than assumed preferences. The compact footprint of 164mm by 376mm acknowledges that office counter space represents real estate decisions. Every element demonstrates that authentic cultural translation requires genuine understanding of destination contexts.
Heritage brands face a perpetual question: adapt or preserve. The Lavazza Classy Plus suggests a third path where adaptation strengthens rather than dilutes identity. Form language maintains family resemblance while features serve specific audiences. Materials guide behavior while communicating quality. For enterprises selecting equipment or brands developing products for new markets, understanding both origin and destination produces objects that belong genuinely in both worlds.
