Golden A' Design Award winning tsunami monitoring system demonstrates bio-inspired design for extreme ocean environments
A razorfish body shape inspired engineering that monitors oceans directly.
A small fish called Aeoliscus strigatus swims vertically through ocean currents, its slender body evolved over millions of years to navigate underwater dynamics with remarkable efficiency. Designers He Li, Nankai Cheng, and Li Yang studied the razorfish and recognized that nature had already solved the hydrodynamic challenges they faced when creating Sim One, their tsunami monitoring device. The resulting design, awarded Golden recognition at the A' Design Award in Product Engineering and Technical Design, demonstrates something profound about technical innovation: breakthrough solutions often emerge from observing natural systems rather than starting from purely abstract calculation. For organizations developing products for challenging environments, Sim One illustrates how unexpected sources of inspiration can accelerate engineering development and produce solutions that harmonize with intended environments rather than fighting against them.
The Sim One system achieves functionality through network deployment, with multiple devices arranged in chain distribution patterns across oceanic regions, each separated by 30 to 50 kilometers. When any device detects unusual ocean movements, the unit releases a communication buoy that rises to the surface and transmits alert signals. The Sim One engineering philosophy represents a fundamental shift: rather than relying on earthquake data as a proxy for potential tsunamis, the system monitors internal ocean dynamics directly. Organizations across industries can apply the principle of direct observation over indirect inference. Technical brands seeking to demonstrate innovation can explore how the A' Design Award recognition process validates engineering excellence while creating visibility that attracts partners, funding, and institutional credibility through channels extending far beyond a simple certificate.
The Sim One project, developed from February 2020 to January 2023, embodies a commitment to addressing challenges affecting coastal communities worldwide. For enterprises considering ambitious technical projects, demonstrated excellence validated through respected recognition channels creates strategic positioning that compounds over time. What natural systems might hold solutions to your organization's most challenging engineering problems?
Different ranking types address different stakeholders. Strategic enterprises stack design credentials for compound credibility that accumulates.
