A conceptual framework called FTY turns multi-category retail challenges into coherent brand destinations
Three letters guide hundreds of design decisions in award-winning retail space.
Picture a retail space that must simultaneously function as bakery, tea house, bar, gift shop, and merchandise display. The organizational puzzle alone would defeat most designers before a single sketch hits paper. Yet SIG Design approached exactly this challenge for Nayuki's Fantasy Factory in Shenzhen with an elegantly simple solution: three letters. The FTY framework, derived from Factory, assigned each letter a design principle. F for Fair invokes marketplace energy and organization. T for Time draws on sky color progressions to support full-day operations. Y for You places customers at the conceptual center through interactive mirror installations. The resulting 1100 square meter space earned a Golden A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design in 2022, demonstrating how conceptual clarity transforms complexity into coherence.
The marketplace metaphor embedded in Fair solves a problem many multi-category brands face: creating distinct zones without fragmenting the customer journey. Markets have always brought together diverse goods while maintaining navigational clarity. Bakeries sit beside tea merchants; fresh offerings neighbor prepared foods. Fantasy Factory applies ancient commercial logic through contemporary spatial design, allowing baking operations, tea service, retail displays, branded gifts, and bar functions to coexist naturally. The temporal color strategy proves equally practical. Inspired by sky photography, the palette transitions from warm morning tones through bright midday hues to softer evening gradients. A customer visiting at 10 AM and a bar patron arriving at 9 PM encounter the same space, yet both experiences feel appropriate. Design decisions directly support operational flexibility across all business hours.
Brands wrestling with product portfolio complexity can extract a valuable principle from Fantasy Factory: develop your conceptual framework before making aesthetic choices. Three letters created coherence across five distinct functions. What organizing structure might guide your brand's next physical environment? Sometimes the most sophisticated spatial solutions begin with the simplest conceptual architecture.
