Within hours of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, designer Eisuke Tachikawa observed something counterintuitive. Countless people wanted to help affected communities, sharing information at a pace too rapid to track. The opportunity became clear: creating a space where collective knowledge could organize itself. Tachikawa and his team at NOSIGNER built Olive, a wiki platform designed to collect and categorize survival techniques from contributors worldwide. The platform achieved over one million page views in three weeks. Five years later, Olive's accumulated knowledge evolved into the Tokyo Disaster Preparedness Guide, distributed to more than eight million households. The trajectory reveals a pattern worth studying: authentic utility during crisis creates trust that compounds into institutional partnership.
Olive's wiki architecture enabled scale through distributed contribution.
