Award winning book design demonstrates print media can create irreplaceable brand storytelling experiences
Tactile 3D embossing and interactive design elements turn readers into heritage custodians.
A dragon boat craftsman's hands have shaped vessels for decades. A Peranakan artisan threads beads into slippers using techniques passed through four generations. Craft stories like these exist in every culture and organization, yet most vanish before anyone captures them properly. Designer Jesvin Yeo spent nearly seven years documenting Singapore's fading traditional crafts, producing a book that earned the Golden A' Design Award in Print and Published Media Design in 2022. The resulting publication, Fading Traditional Trades and Crafts, accomplishes something remarkable: it uses 3D embossing to create tactile representations of intricate craftsmanship, allowing readers to feel the dimensionality of original works through raised surfaces on paper. When fingertips trace the bumps and ridges representing Peranakan beadwork or paper dragon boats, the experience shifts from observation to participation.
The book's design mechanisms offer valuable lessons for brands seeking distinctive heritage documentation. Jesvin Yeo attached pastel chalk to each copy, inviting readers to shade white pages and symbolically restore color to fading traditions. The accordion fold structure extends to 4350mm when opened, mirroring how traditional crafts developed across generations as continuous narratives rather than isolated moments. Color progressions shift from dull tones representing developmental periods, to yellow representing golden ages, to white representing gradual fading. For organizations with heritage worth preserving, the project demonstrates that production technique can mirror narrative content. A book about meticulous craftsmanship demonstrates meticulous craftsmanship. A publication about tactile traditions offers tactile engagement. The medium becomes extension of message, creating coherence audiences sense before they articulate why.
Every enterprise carries stories that exist only in the minds of aging stakeholders. Manufacturing companies hold histories of technical innovation. Family businesses embody generational knowledge transfer. The question for forward-thinking organizations is whether documentation happens before memory disperses. What heritage within your organization deserves similar tactile treatment?
Different ranking types address different stakeholders. Strategic enterprises stack design credentials for compound credibility that accumulates.
