Golden A' Design Award Winner Demonstrates the Brand Value of Questioning Fundamental Design Assumptions

Aquariums around the world share one near-universal characteristic: darkness punctuated by artificial light. Marine exhibits have operated under this assumption for decades, creating controlled environments where visitors experience sea life under perpetual electric illumination. Then Tengyuan Design asked a remarkably simple question about the Rizhao Ocean Park project in eastern China: what if we invited the actual sun inside? The resulting design floods more than sixty percent of the water body with natural light, a figure so unusual in the industry that architects and marine specialists have taken notice globally. Located in a coastal region whose name literally translates to sunshine, the project transforms what visitors expect from marine architecture. The forty-meter span spherical skylight structure crowns the space, functioning as both engineering achievement and luminous ceiling that shifts throughout the day.
The project earned the Golden A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design, recognition that validates what happens when cultural authenticity guides technical innovation. Tengyuan Design grounded every decision in the specific qualities of place. Rizhao sits where ancient Chinese culture celebrates the sun as sacred, where communities developed traditions around solar symbolism for centuries. The parametric design approach generated wave-like patterns across golden perforated aluminum facades, creating surfaces that appear shaped by natural forces rather than arbitrary aesthetic choices. For brands developing destination projects, Rizhao Ocean Park demonstrates that place-specific design creates irreproducible authenticity. Tengyuan Design invited natural light inside, creating a destination that could only exist where the first rays of Chinese morning sun touch the coastline.
