Konior Studio's Platinum Award Winning Circular Design Reveals the Power of Background Architecture
Heritage preservation and acoustic innovation created an exceptionally intimate concert hall for Warsaw.
The most compelling architectural decisions often emerge when designers choose restraint over dominance. Tomasz Konior faced a remarkable design challenge in Warsaw, where a decaying former orphanage building occupied nearly the entire street frontage. Rather than demolishing the historic structure, Konior Studio positioned the new music school concert hall deep within the plot, allowing existing architecture to become the front door to something extraordinary. The circular concert hall spans 24 meters in diameter and splits the footprint equally between 70 musicians and 300 audience members. The last row sits only 8 meters from the stage, transforming performance from distant spectacle into intimate conversation between artists and listeners.
Cultural institutions commissioning new facilities often discover unexpected value in collaborating with surrounding context. The Warsaw concert hall demonstrates contextual collaboration with striking clarity. By reducing the site fence and creating a public square where a bunker once stood, Konior Studio transformed an institutional building into a neighborhood asset. Inside, ash wood sails individually milled and joined as acoustic elements create surfaces developed with Nagata Acoustics to rival leading concert halls worldwide. The reinforced concrete walls required rubber formwork in specially designed shapes to achieve precise sound reflection patterns. Recognition through the Platinum A' Design Award in 2021 validated what the architecture already communicated: exceptional acoustic engineering wrapped in design that serves the urban setting.
The Warsaw concert hall illustrates a principle applicable far beyond music education: architecture that respects existing context often achieves greater distinction through creative collaboration with place. For organizations evaluating cultural building projects, Konior Studio's approach offers clear guidance. Working within constraints requires more creativity, generates more memorable spatial sequences, and produces facilities that communities embrace as genuine neighborhood contributions.
